Anti-virus software developer Symantec has added a new free feature to its website to give consumers up-to-date information on the risk level associated with activities such as web browsing, e-mail or instant messaging.
The Internet Threat Meter alerts people to the current online threats. The levels are determined by triggers related to viruses, online fraud, vulnerabilities, online attacks, and spam. For example, if a high number of threats, such as phishing e-mails, are being sent, the e-mail threat level will rise. The medium level could be used when, for example, a software flaw is found but is not being exploited to attack users.
It also advises people on how to protect their personal information whilst online.
