Secondary school students from across Ireland are currently in preparation for the regional finals of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge. 150 teams representing 110 schools across 22 counties are putting the final touches to their model Formula One racers ahead of regional finals of the competition starting later this month.
Sponsored by Honda, and operated in Ireland by the Irish Computer Society, the competition challenges students to design, build and race CO2-powered balsa wood cars based on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology.
In addition , there is a substantial prize fund on offer for the winning schools. This includes a trip for the overall winning team to the Honda Racing F1 Team Operations Centre in Brackley, England and the right to represent Ireland at the World Finals in spring 2009.
Jim Friars, CEO of the Irish Computer Society, commented “The Irish Computer Society is delighted to see the F1 in Schools competition grow so quickly. We are encouraged that schools appreciate the benefits of participating in the multi-disciplinary Challenge, not just with regard to promoting technology subjects but also its wider educational value.”
Peter Brabazon, Programme Director at Discover Science & Engineering added, “The Honda Formula 1 in Schools Challenge is a fantastic initiative to help develop engineering-related skills in secondary schools across the country. We are delighted to be part of such a dynamic project.”
The Regional Finals of the Honda-powered F1 in Schools Technology Challenge will run from 26 February until 11 March at venues across the country.
