Sun is shipping two new drives with its StorEdge 3900 and 6900 midrange storage systems: The 181Gbyte high density disk drive and the 36Gbyte 15,000 RPM disk drive.
The new drives offer double the storage capacity of the current systems in the same physical space.
The addition of the 181Gbyte disk drives to Sun’s midrange systems increases capacity from an estimated 11Tbyte to more than 29Tbyte in a maximum configuration.
According to Sun, the addition of the 36Gbyte 15,000 RPM disk drives to the StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series should enhance their performance by 50 per cent. Response times for random read and write are said to increase by over 30 per cent.
