The Convention Centre Dublin hosted the finals of the IBM SmartCamp competition, where Streetline Networks was named as the overall winner.
There were nine finalists in the competition which is part of IBM’s Global Entrepreneur initiative. One of the finalists was Ireland’s TreeMetrics, which developed software to meet the needs of the international forestry industry. TreeMetrics has developed technology to measure standings trees in forests using 3D scanning. It also created a decision support system to calculate yields based on sawmill requirements.
Along with Sproxil, which develops market intelligence gathering techniques using mobile phones to help counteract counterfeiting of medicines, TreeMetrics were singled out for special praise for their efforts and their potential contribution to society.
Streetline Networks has developed an ultra-low power sensor network for cities that can allow cities to effectively manage their parking resources, significantly reducing congestion.
An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD, said in his remarks at the event that Ireland “is an ideal location” for smart start-ups and as it provided a “supportive and dynamic environment” for such businesses.
The Taoiseach restated his government’s intention of making Ireland “a global innovation hub” and “the best place in Europe to grow and expand an SME (small to medium enterprise).”
The Taoiseach thanked IBM for bringing the SmartCamp finals to Ireland and, half in jest but wholly in earnest, he personally invited each of the finalists to establish their some or all of their respective businesses in Ireland, “adding that there are still plenty of reasons to be confident in Ireland’s potential.”
“The SmartCamp participants are all excellent examples of the kind of next generation entrepreneurs we need to make Europe an Innovation Union,” said M
