Start the year with a light touch

Gentle giant: The Sandberg 2.4G wireless multimedia keyboard may look as if it’s on steroids, but it’s light to the touch and responsive (mouse and dongle not to scale)

The Sandberg 2.4G wireless multimedia keyboard is slightly larger than most others we’ve seen. It’s also one of the heaviest – thanks to a reassuringly solid build quality reminiscent of my first hi-fi system from that other reliable Danish manufacturer, Bang & Olufsen (amazingly, the old B&O tape deck rumbles on 35 years later).

Despite its somewhat muscular appearance, the Sandberg keyboard’s rubberised keys have a delightfully light yet responsive touch, so no missed keystrokes.

It also has a non-detachable flexible wrist-rest – and a warning light that comes on only when the batteries (not supplied) need replacing. I initially found this confusing, expecting it to light up while battery power was good – but a moment’s thought about this and the logic becomes clear. Nice one, Sandberg!

In addition to a full set of typing, function and numeric keys, this keyboard has nine additional buttons for launching various apps (calculator and browsers, for example) and for controlling media players’ volume levels and functions. It carries a five-year warranty and comes with a multi-language user guide.

My only disappointment was the lack of a Caps Lock warning light. However, considering its sturdiness and its VAT-inclusive price of price: €35.99 for keyboard and the accompanying wireless laser mouse, this is a minor niggle.

The wireless laser mouse that comes bundled with this keyboard is identical to the one we recently reviewed – and note that the single USB dongle serves both input devices simultaneously. As noted then, the mouse is among the best we’ve encountered, gliding smoothly and filling the average hand.
