New research commissioned on behalf of Microsoft Ireland reveals that 52 percent of the general public believe that software piracy is widespread amongst businesses in Ireland.

However, only 24 percent of people think that software piracy can be linked to actual job losses and just 13 percent believe that Garda anti-fraud intervention is necessary in cases where software piracy is discovered.

Microsoft Ireland’s SMB Group Manager Paul Mason says that the study shows that Irish people aren’t taking software piracy seriously. ‘The research highlights a general lack of awareness as to the widespread economic effects of software piracy, says Mason. ‘The buying of illegal software not only denies users proprietary rights but in the long term deprives Irish people of job opportunities in the software industry.

The study also reveals that Irish people are misinformed about the possible penalties that can be imposed on companies found using or selling illegal software. Around 80 percent of survey respondents believed the only penalty for usage of pirated software was a company fine, while just four percent were aware that employees or management could be personally prosecuted.
