The Irish Software Association (ISA) awarded eight world-class indigenous software firms prestigious prizes, at its annual software industry awards ceremony, in the Burlington Hotel. The awards, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, William Fry, Helix Health and Science Foundation Ireland, recognised the outstanding contribution that the software industry makes to Ireland’s economy.

Company of the year went to Helix Health, a provider of healthcare software and IT solutions, for its strong focus on innovation and clear export strategy based on high value sales to larger clients. With a 98% client renewal rate, and a staff of 88, Helix Health is Ireland’s largest indigenous healthcare IT provider and is emerging as an international player.

Software Industry Person of the Year was awarded to Bernie Cullinan, CEO of Clarigen. Cullinan established the Leadership 4 Growth programme for Irish managers in Stanford University, chaired the ISA from 2005 to 2007; and is a past president of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

The Student of the Year Award was won by Alex Sintoni of UCD, for developing a hosted utility consumption portal and benchmarking service that offers enterprises real-time, personalised utility consumption data.

The Emerging Software Business award went to Service-Frame based in Dublin, while the Business Collaboration award was won by Qumas in Cork. dotMobi scooped up the Technical innovation award for its .mobi domain product, which allows consumers to identify web sites that work on mobiles.

“Irish software companies have had tremendous successes this year. In contrast to turmoil in the rest of the economy,” said Dr Sean Baker, chair of the ISA, “technology has performed strongly with a net employment growth rate of 6% this year. The indigenous software sector currently employs over 10,000 people in Ireland with combined sales of €1.4 billion.”

Director of the ISA, Paul Sweetman added “The awards are an important benchmark for the Irish software industry and have become increasingly important to companies over the past number of years.”
