Picture: Cranberry claims its Smart Client uses a tenth of the power of a conventional PC

Cranberry has launched its SC20 Smart Client in Ireland. It is described by the maker as a powerful device that is the first to combine the benefits of thin client technology – better security, lower management and running costs – with the power and peripheral support of a conventional PC.

The device is targeted at the growing number of firms deploying thin, fat and virtual client application models, and at firms that are looking to reduce energy consumption.

The SC20, says Cranberry, is the industry’s most energy-efficient alternative to a desktop computer. It enables businesses to reduce their computers’ carbon footprint ‘by up to 95%,’ the maker claims. Put another way, if an average office PC in use nine hours a day, five days a week for 48 weeks a year emits 176kg of CO2 annually, a Smart Client would produce just 9kg.

The size of a paperback book, the SC20 performs the business functions of a fat PC, including web browsing, but has the easy management and security features of a thin client device. The SC is immune to attacks by and spyware because it loads a fresh copy of the operating system every time it starts. Due to its ultra-efficient microprocessor, the Smart Client consumes less than 10% of the power of a standard PC while using Microsoft Windows XP Embedded operating system, says Cranberry.

With an entry price of EUR*450, the SC20 is available in Ireland through Cranberry’s distribution partner, CDG: 091-700597.
