For the sixth year Google is calling on primary and secondary school students across the country to get doodling for this year’s annual Doodle 4 Google competition.
This year’s theme is ‘my adventure’ and children are being encouraged to let their inner adventurer run wild and get creative with the Google logo. The winning doodle will be announced on 24 March and will appear on the Google Ireland homepage for 24 hours.
The student with the winning doodle will receive a €5,000 scholarship towards their third level studies. In addition, the winning student’s school will receive a €10,000 technology grant. Also, each of the five category winners and their teachers will receive Chromebook laptops.
A panel of judges from art, education and technology will narrow down thousands of entrants to 75 finalists, 15 from each of five categories: Junior and Senior Infants; First and Second Class; Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class; First, Second and Third Year; and Transition Year, Fifth and Sixth year, and Youthreach.
The finalists will then have their doodles displayed on the Doodle 4 Google website and the general public will be able to vote for their favourite doodle. The winners of each category will go forward to a Grand Final where the overall winner, as chosen by the official Google doodle team, will be announced.
John Herlihy, head of Google Ireland, said: "Inspiring young people’s creativity and encouraging them to use their imaginations is something that is very important to Google. For this year’s competition we have chosen the theme ‘My Adventure’, so whether it’s exploring outer space, climbing Mount Everest or just experiencing adventures in the playground, we can’t wait for this year’s entrants to take us on their adventure with their own interpretation of the theme."
The deadline for entries is 13 December 2013.
