Following the publication of its IT Manager’s Guide for SMEs, the Small Firms Association has completed a successful series of seminars at locations around the country including Limerick, Sligo and Galway. These seminars, together with the report, form part of a major campaign by the Association to educate small companies on IT management. Following the seminars, the SFA distributed a detailed questionnaire. In addition to the usual questions asking if companies have a network, how large the company’s IT budget is and so on, respondents are also asked what the government should be investing in and their opinion of e-commerce “experts.” According to SFA Deputy Director Patricia Callanan, the surveys have now been collected and are being examined. The results should be made public in a few weeks time.

The Small Firms Association’s annual conference took place on October 2nd, 2002 at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin. Chaired by Brian Farrell, the conference heard from speakers including Willie Walsh, chief executive, Aer Lingus and Cathal Magee, managing director of Eircom Retail. Also speaking was Gary Owens, managing director of Hibernian Insurance, who announced a new software package that would allow users to manage their company’s exposure to risk and thus reduce insurance premiums. Company’s that sign up for the package will qualify for a discount of 10% on their premiums.
