The Small Firms Association, in association with HP and Microsoft, has launched an information pack for small companies, seeking to better manage their information technology resources. Dubbed the ‘IT Management Guidelines for Small Business’, it is being distributed to members of the Association.

Launching the guidelines at a ceremony in July, Tanaiste Mary Harney paid tribute to the work that was put into the project. She particularly praised the ‘jargon-free’ approach, pointing out that many of the people in business today grew up in an era where IT simply ‘didn’t exist’. But, she continued, ICT is here to stay and the guide contains many good ideas for small businesses.

Prepared by Ian Campbell, the guide is divided into eleven sections covering topics ranging from planning and implementation, training, health and safety, e-mail and Internet policies to networking.

The launch of the guidelines will now be followed by a three-phase campaign, according to SFA assistant director, Patricia Callan. ‘In the first phase the guidelines will be sent out to all of our members,’ she said. ‘We will then hold a series of management seminars at venues around the country during September and October. Each of these will last two hours and will feature a panel of four expert speakers.’

The topics to be covered are the A to Z of good IT management, e-mail and Internet abuse; How, when and what to buy and software licensing.

The third phase of the campaign will be a questionnaire covering the issues raised in the guidelines and seminars.
