Grange Primary School in Co. Roscommon has become the 500th school to be connected to Ripplecom’s broadband network.
Installing broadband in the country’s 4,000 primary and secondary schools is being carried out under the Dept of Education’s Broadband for Schools programme which has been underway since 2005.
“High quality broadband is transforming the way teachers are using technology to deliver education to their pupils. It helps in teaching literacy and numeracy in Junior classes, and enables teachers use whiteboards and other digital tools, as well as teaching computer literacy. Broadband is also used to access school websites and blogs, and to share information with parents,” said Minister for Communications, Climate Change & Natural Resources Denis Naughten.
“It is also a very valuable resource for teachers in accessing online teaching services such as scoilnet.ie. It is helping everyone, including parents, teachers and schoolchildren, to become citizens of the world.”
Ripplecom managing director John McDonnell said: “High quality broadband is transforming all our lives, and it’s vital that our young people are able to take advantage of it in the classroom. Access to broadband gives the children of Grange National School a window on the world, and it will make their time in the classroom all the more rewarding and exciting.”
Over the next three months, Ripplecom expects to install broadband in a further 100 primary schools.
