Government cross-departmental body Reach has expanded the capability of the Inter-Agency Messaging Service (IAMS), which supports the electronic exchange of customer data within the public service.

The new Death Event Publication Service (DEPS) service, which is delivered over IAMS, enables government departments and agencies to receive validated death-event notifications for use in internal business processes.

The goal of the service, which is the result of collaboration between Reach, the General Register Office and the Department of Social and Family Affairs, is to enable government agencies to use information to add value to their business transactions with public service customers.

XML-based DEPS, developed by integration specialist Propylon, allows government agencies to subscribe to or receive business level messages over the Government Virtual Private Network (gVPN). The messages can be either directly consumed by departmental or agency computer systems, or may be manually downloaded and implemented within the department or agency.

‘DEPS is a good example of a business-driven service in that its development was sparked by demand from public service agencies for early notification of deaths of subscribers to enable them to realise significant savings in payments of pensions and medical benefits,’ said Oliver Ryan, director of Reach. The agency is
mandated by the Irish government to build the Public Services Broker (PSB), an integrated set of processes, systems and procedures that will provide a standard means of access to public services.
