HP’s ProLiant BL p-Class system is based on a multiprocessor blade server architecture — said to be the industry’s first.

The p-Class architecture protects server information using intelligent fault-resilient power, hot-plug SCSI drives, redundant network interface cards (NICs) and an integrated RAID controller.

It is designed to let users add server blades, interconnects and power as needed. HP also claims that the p-Class reduces the amount of cabling by 80 per cent compared with traditional servers.

The BL20p initial blade runs on up to two Pentium III processors and comes with two hot-plug SCSI drives, 4Gbyte ECC SDRAM max memory and an integrated RAID controller with battery-backed write cache.

The ProLiant BL20p is said to be the first server blade to offer up to 144Gbyte of internal storage. Also included is HP’s Integrated Lights-out (iLO) technology that provides intelligent infrastructure and blade management. This feature also offers ‘virtual presence and control’ — letting users remotely manage blades, even if the operating system is not functioning.
