During its E3 presentation last July, Sony said it would bring original television programming to the PlayStation Network. Several months after that early announcement we now know what Sony’s first series will be: an adaptation of the Powers comic book series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.
Powers follows the lives of homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who investigate crimes that involve people with superpowers – commonly referred to as ‘powers’ in the series.
A favorite with comic fans, Powers was in development for TV at Fox’s FX channel for several years, even going so far as to create a pilot. The show never got off the ground, however.
The first series of Powers for the PlayStation Network will span around 10 hour-long episodes, according to Deadline.
Sony Pictures TV will head up production of the series and will also handle international distribution. In the US, the Powers debut will be available exclusively on the PlayStation Network.
Unless Sony plans on changing its policies, that means US viewers that want to see Powers will have to own a PlayStation device to see the show’s debut run. Anyone who’s not familiar with the Powers story line can catch up via the Comixology app for Android or iOS.
A specific release date for Powers was not announced. Microsoft also plans on creating its own original programming for Xbox Live with a series based on the popular Xbox series Halo,with Stephen Spielberg as executive producer.
Despite announcing the series last May, Deadline says Halo has yet to be approved for production.
