Sony has delayed the launch of its next-generation PlayStation 3 games console in Ireland until March 2007. So Irish gamers will have to wait to get their hands on Sony’s next generation console until four months after their American and Japanese counterparts.

Niall O’Hanrahan, MD, Sony Computer Entertainment, Ireland explained that the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group was the result of problems with the Blu-ray high-definition DVD format.

The PlayStation 3 console was due to launch in Ireland in November to mirror the 11 November and 17 November releases in Japan and North America.

Sony insisted that it still expects to ship six million PlayStation 3 units in 2007, despite the delays.

O’Hanrahan said that although it was disappinting not to have the consoles before Christmas, ‘it would have been a bigger nightmare not to have enough of stock to satisfy demand locally. He also told us that the Irish gaming retailers ‘fully appreciated’ the circumstances that caused the delay and that alternative Sony products such as a Pink-themed (the pop star) PS2 and the PSP would provide satisfactory alternatives. Sony Computer Entertainment Ireland expects to sell 65,000 PS2 in Ireland for Christmas and over 100,000 PSPs in Ireland this Christmas.
