Immediately, in April the company will launch two new high capacity portable music player with 4 and 8Gb capacities respectively. A 2 Gb flash player memory-based player will follow in July. Like Creative and Apple before it, the company also has plans for a portable media player that will play back compressed movies, but this will not be available until September at least.
Movies will be well catered for by its other product launches. In June, the first Ambilight 4 LCD TV will be launched and with it, light will resonate from sides of the sides of the TV immersing the viewer in the action. Philips’ range of LCDs will also feature new designs with all black and chrome finishes.
Also due for release is perhaps the most exciting technology of the year – Blu-ray. This high capacity disc will hold 50Gb of data on a single-sided disc and will allow the user to store up to 23 hours of standard definition TV recording on the disc. Its hard coating will also protect the disc from scratches. Philips will launch its first Blu ray disc player after September and Lisa, product manager, Philips Ireland, estimates that the player will retails for EUR*1,500.
Philips had also stolen a lead in streaming media around the home with its WAC 7 product which it unveiled in October. Now the company plans to bring another streaming device to market in the form of the WAC 5. Retailing for EUR*749, this component-style streamer with hard disk is designed to sit by your Hi-Fi and allow you to stream burned music CDs which you have converted to MP3, to a client in the bedroom which will play back the music. Ultimately, these WAC streamers will be replaced by new models in September which will feature Sonowave technology. This means that the speakers that come with the streamers will offer superior sound by crating the effect of the sound of three speakers coming from one.
