PC power management via network

Dublin software company Servaplex has released software for automating PC power-management across the network. The Green IT Solution, from New Boundary Technologies is claimed to “dramatically reduce PC and monitor power consumption, energy costs, and environmental impact.”

Servaplex points out that the average PC, if left on all the time, uses over 700 kilowatts-hours of electricity – more than an average refrigerator, according to US Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, the average PC wastes about 400 kilowatt-hours by running at full power when not in use.

Managing PC power consumption can cut a firm’s computing energy costs by 60%, and Servaplex points out that the potential for energy cost savings through PC power management is one reason Gartner, the analysis firm, named Green IT as its top strategic technology of 2008.

The solution automates the implementation and enforcement of power management on Windows desktops, laptops, and servers by monitoring systems and automatically enforcing the selected power management profiles and settings even if end users try to disable or change them.

The US Department of Energy estimates that only 36% of workforce PCs are turned off at the end of the working day. Other research shows that, when PC-based power management functions are enabled, most users disable them within months. So organisations need a solution that implements PC power management at the network level, and which uses automation technologies to continuously enforce and maintain power management functions.

New Boundary Technologies’ Tom Diamond said organisations everywhere are realising that green initiatives, as well as reducing energy waste and emissions, “help the bottom line by immediately cutting energy costs.”
