OUYA Android console achieves funding milestone

There was good news for gamers and hardware hackers with the announcent that the OUYA open source games console had surpassed its Kickstarter funding target. In fact the project’s over 63,000 donors raised $8,596,475.

The OUYA runs a version of Google’s Android operating system and can run any game written for it with some alterations to facilitate ther jump from mobile to console gaming.

The console uses technology more familiar to smartphone users as well, relying on a quad-core Intel Tegra 3 processor, 8Gb of internal storage, SD card slot and USB connection, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The OUYA is expected to go on sale in March 2013 for Kickstarter donors with first deliveries for everyone else arriving in April.
