The Open Handset Alliance, a group of technology and mobile players, has announced the addition ofof 14 additional companies to its roster. The new members include ASUSTek, Sony Ericsson, Garmin, Huawei, Toshiba and Vodafone. These companies will either deploy compatible Android devices, contribute significant code to the Android Open Source Project, or support the ecosystem through products and services that will accelerate the availability of Android-based devices.
Open Handset Alliance members’ continued contributions to Android are intended to provide mobile phone users with a free and complete mobile platform to build Android devices. Android made it’s debut last month as part of the G1, a HTC handset running the operating system as standard.
Despite a positive reaction from critics, the G1 has yet to make significant inroads to the smartphone market.
