The security of thousands of British bank accounts could be compromised by recycled PCs.
Fraudsters in Nigeria have been able to get hold of old PCs being sent by British people to Africa. The computers contain documents that give away details of the bank accounts of thousands of Britons.
The revelations come in a BBC documentary, The Real Story.
Journalists for the programme found computers from all over the world on sale in Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. Many of the computers had come from council recycling points in this country.
Security experts recommend that anyone donating an old computer should use a professional program such as Eraser to wipe the hard disk first. For the best security, the disk should be removed and destroyed before the computer is given away.
