NWO issues multi-million euro grant for research into brain-inspired computers
A consortium led by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands is receiving a grant of €9 million from the long-term programme of the NWO Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) to establish an ecosystem for neuromorphic technologies: an emerging field that designs new types of computer systems inspired by the information-processing principles of the human brain.
The project, 10X-Factor(y): Towards a Dutch ecosystem for neuromorphic technologies, has an estimated total budget of €30 million and will bringing together research institutions, companies and universities of applied sciences, the initiative aims to accelerate the development of the next generation of computer systems that are many times faster and more energy-efficient than current solutions.
CogniGron at the University of Groningen will lead the consortium in collaboration with partners such as Radboud University, TNO, Eindhoven University of Technology, the University of Twente, Delft University of Technology and ASTRON, and a range of high-tech companies including Infineon, Innatera, Snap Inc, Synopsis, Batenburg Beenen, Sencure, IMChip, Oxford Instruments and OPT/NET. Together they will cover the entire innovation chain, from advanced materials, devices and chip design to system integration and applications.
The programme is structured around seven demonstrators representing seven use cases, ranging from automation & robotics, health monitoring & diagnostics to field sensors. By demonstrating the advantages of neuromorphic computer systems for practical use cases, 10X-Factor(y) will help unlock economic opportunities; a key component of the KI-LTP programme therefore concerns private investment.
Through the RU Neuromorphic Computing Initiative, Radboud University plays a key role in this programme, with contributions from several research institutes, including IMM, ICIS and Donders. It is also supported by existing initiatives such as NL-ECO, Mission 10X, as well as the recently established NC-NL coalition and national research programmes in the fields of AI, computing, photonics and semiconductors. The 10X-Factor(y) programme builds on this foundation by integrating fragmented efforts into a coordinated, industry-driven ecosystem. With shared infrastructure, co-design platforms and frameworks for responsible innovation, the programme will put the Netherlands on the map as a world leader in sustainable, energy-efficient computing.
