The Association of Information Managers in Ireland (AIM Ireland) was officially launched last month by the Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney.

AIM Ireland is the new name for one of the country’s longest established computer user groups, the IBM Computer Users Association. As revealed in ComputerScope in March, the IBM CUG went out of existence in February 2002 to be replaced by the new organisation, which will not have ties to any one vendor.

To underscore this point, the organisation has already secured sponsorship from six technology companies, each representing different sectors of the industry. These are: Microsoft Ireland, System Dynamics, Sharptext, research firm Gartner, Cable & Wireless, and Horizon Open Systems/Sun Microsystems.

The president of AIM Ireland, Karen Forte of insurance company Allianz, said the organisation aims to recruit 400 members by 2007: ‘while we’ll never be huge, I think this is an achievable target’.

Speaking at the launch in the Westbury Hotel, the Tanaiste said that the evolution of the organisation from being a group of computer users to a group of information managers is reflection of the maturity and pervasiveness of the ICT industry in Ireland.

‘While this rapid rate of change has brought great opportunities, it also presents enormous challenges for users of the technologies,’ she said. ‘Failure to respond to these changing technologies can result in loss of business opportunities and loss of competitiveness.’
