The Government has announced new intellectual property protocol to make it easier to commercialise results of publicly-funded research and development projects. The new structures are aimed at creating more jobs from ideas developed through research and development which currently receives over €800 million per year in public money.

A new central technology transfer office will act as a one-stop shop for businesses seeking to use intellectual property (IP) deriving from publicly funded research. There will also be standardised IP terms to facilitate the commercialisation of research towards the development of new products and services.

Attending the launch, Minister for jobs, enterprise and innovation Richard Bruton said: "A key part of the Government’s plan for jobs and growth is ensuring that we create more products, services and ultimately jobs from Ireland’s top quality scientific research system. [This] announcement marks a major evolution of the relationship between industry and publicly-funded research."
