Data centre specialist Digital Realty Trust has adopted new standards for constructing its facilities in future.

The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (Breeam) Bespoke data centre standards were developed to cover buildings not included in the mainstream environmental assessment schemes for offices, retail, healthcare and education purposes.

The advantages of scheme development using the Breeam framework include reduced cost of assessments. It also provides ready-made criteria against which developers, designers and clients can assess planned buildings.

Digital Realty Trust’s CTO, Jim Smith, said Breeam certification had “tremendous value” for the data centre industry. “We are adopting its guidelines as best practices for the way we design, build and operate data centres around the world.”
