Digital entertainment services firm RealNetworks has significantly increased its presence at the Frankfurt campus of Data centre specialist Interxion.

This follows a steep rise in demand for RealNetworks’ digital media and entertainment services, and resulting plans are for the entertainment firm to expand its Interxion-based infrastructure by about 75%.

Interxion’s Frankfurt campus is Germany’s largest data hub. It is close to the main fibre-optic lines, giving access to over 70 carriers and 80 internet service providers.

RealNetworks, best known for pioneering the RealPlayer and RealAudio applications, has hosted online services from Interxion data centres since 2007. These include its music-on-demand services operated for European mobile carriers, as well as video-on-demand for web-based entertainment platforms.
