Mobile gaming to go global

Multiplayer online gaming over mobile phones has finally arrived in Ireland. Nokia has just launched its N-Gage gaming phone and its global mobile gaming network — the N-Gage Arena. The good news for fans of Snake and ‘postage stamp’ gaming is that access to the service and the games is being offered free of charge for a limited trial period. However, users have to pay for the data calls they make over GPRS to access the service. Nokia is hosting the service and it is being offered to gamers through operators such as Vodafone and O2. Nokia is also providing software publishers and developers with tools to create new online content for their games.

Some of the key launch features of the N-Gage Arena include: cheats (downloads that boost the characters abilities or help the player out of a sticky situation), game clips (allowing gamers to record a game sequence and uploads it for other players to view), Shadow Gaming (enabling gamers to post a ‘shadow’ of his/her character, which other players can contest), strategy guides and walk-throughs (game recordings to demonstrate how a game challenge is solved), high score posting, and 2-player gaming in a live situation.
