Microsoft is ending support for Skype and shifting its focus to Microsoft Teams.

From 5 May existing Skype users can choose to migrate their call history, contacts and message logs to Microsoft Teams without creating a new account. Alternatively, they can export their data to keep them independently. Microsoft also provides a tool to view Skype chat history for those who prefer not to switch to Teams.

During the 60-day transition period, Microsoft will ensure interoperability between Teams and Skype so that users on both platforms can message each other seamlessly. Group chats started on Skype will remain intact within Teams after the transition. However, Microsoft will discontinue phone call features within Skype. This includes calling domestic and international numbers, as well as cell phones.

Microsoft cites changing user preferences and market trends as reasons for this decision. The widespread adoption of Internet calling and affordable mobile data plans have reduced the need for Skype’s traditional calling features.

This change reflects a larger strategy by Microsoft to consolidate its communications platforms under Teams. Although launched in 2020, Microsoft had initially stuck with both Skype and Teams. However, recent developments such as the discontinuation of Skype credits and phone numbers indicated a shift toward Teams.

The transition from Skype to Teams is not expected to result in immediate job losses. The teams responsible for both Skype and Teams have already merged into one group focused on enhancing Teams’ capabilities.
