Meta is working on customisable chatbots within its AI Studio platform, designed to be more proactive in interacting with users. Internal documents reveal a project, codenamed Omni, that aims to improve user retention by enabling these chatbots to start conversations and track previous interactions, reports Business Insider.

The goal is to add value and encourage users to return to the platform. Although the feature is not designed as a solution for loneliness, Meta does hope to increase engagement with its AI Studio, which is accessible both independently and via Instagram. AI Studio will launch in the summer of 2024 and will allow anyone to create personalised chatbots with unique personalities and memories.

Training guidelines from data tagging company Alignerr illustrate how a persona named ‘The Maestro of Movie Magic’ could send proactive messages to users: asking about their favorite new soundtracks or offering recommendations for movie nights. Meta confirms that it has tested sending follow-up messages for AIs in its AI Studio, but emphasises that these follow-ups only occur after a user has initiated a conversation and are limited to a period of 14 days after the first interaction.

Users can create highly personalised chatbots, such as chefs suggesting recipes or interior designers giving decoration advice. Creators and influencers can use these bots to manage interactions with fans on Meta platforms.

Meta insists that its AI does not continue to contact users if there is no response to the first follow-up message. In addition, chatbots must actively adhere to the platform’s content and responsibility standards. They avoid sensitive or harmful content unless the user explicitly requests it.

Freelancers use an internal review tool called SRT to simulate conversations with the bots, evaluate proactive messages, and refine the text to align with Meta’s guidelines.

The focus is on personalisation and context awareness, so that every interaction with the chatbot reflects the assigned persona and the history of previous conversations. Messages must be positive and relevant, and avoid controversial or emotionally heavy topics unless initiated by the user. The best messages refer to concrete details from previous interactions, creating a more natural and enjoyable experience.
