Dublin-based Mentec International has won the tender from the Ordnance Survey of Ireland (OSi) to supply a software tool that distributes mapping data over the Internet. The EUR1.92m contract was won following a Europe-wide invitation to tender.
When the project has been completed, OSi customers will be able to access up-to-date spatial information such as vector data, raster data, hard copy maps and aerial photography, through a self-service Website. Users of geographic information systems (GIS) will also be able to access spatial data as they need it.
The project, which is due for completion in September of this year, will involve converting existing GIS data from a file-based system running on Windows NT and Compaq VMS platforms, to an open database using an Oracle Spatial database. Industry and international standards, such as GML, will be used extensively.
Mentec’s offering includes ESRI ArcIMS, the market-leading GIS system for the Internet, Microsoft Commerce Server and Mentec Self Serve, an Internet-based customer self-service system.
