The makeITsecure taskforce issued a series of tips to the public to promote the safer use of the Internet among businesses, consumers, and young and family users. Now in its fourth year, the campaign highlights to people the increased security issues associated with the Internet. It is led by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in partnership with Symantec, Irish Banking Federation, Microsoft, BT Ireland, Three, 02, Vodafone, eircom and Comreg.

The tip sheet includes a number of simple things people can do to stay safe, including using strong, complex passwords; using a secure connection when shopping online; avoiding pop-ups; and avoiding random contact with strangers.

Speaking today on behalf of BT Ireland, Ciaron Nelis said: "As the threat environment grows ever more complex and pervasive. Raising awareness of the cybersecurity risks faced by individuals and organisations alike is extremely important in today’s connected world. The principles that underpin makeITsecure are no different to those used to develop some of the most advanced security solutions of our partners in defence, government and the financial sector. Initiatives such as makeITsecure are vital in educating those using the Internet for work or for play, so that they understand these threats, their motives financial or otherwise and can take steps to protect their information and more importantly themselves."

Microsoft Consumer Channels Group director and taskforce member of makeITsecure Orla Sheridan said: "The Internet is a wonderful educational tool and children’s use of the Web is increasing every day. Although this gives them huge advantages, we need to recognise that certain basic things need to be done in order to ensure the safety of our children when online."
