IT upgrade for a Victorian landmark

Virtualisation specialist Novosco has won a three-year contract to host and manage the IT infrastructure for the Malton Hotel in Killarney. Unusually, the Malton, formerly the Great Southern, paid for everything as a service.

Novosco sales director Eddie O’Rourke noted: “Not only is this attractive from a cash flow point of view, but this approach means The Malton now has a consistent and predictable cost for IT for at least the next three years. This brings the business some comfort in uncertain times.”

The project was delivered within one month and provides The Malton with a level of resilience and flexibility normally only available to large corporations, said O’Rourke.

The solution leverages several types of virtualisation to allow all of The Malton’s applications to run securely and reliably from a dedicated data centre.

The hotel’s general manager Conor Hennigan, commented: “We liked this approach because it meant everything was paid for out of operating expenditure. The idea of investing in lots of hardware which depreciates very quickly was not appealing to us. Most importantly, we have been extremely happy with the performance and support of the system since it went live.”

The project differs from traditional hosted solutions in that the customer did not bring any hardware to the data centre. O’Rourke explains how this was possible: “We are able to charge for everything required for the hosted service as one recurring fee because we had already made the investment in the virtualised real estate inside the Blanchardstown data centre. The Malton is effectively renting virtual plots on this infrastructure while gaining all of the benefits of the data centre.”

O’Rouke added: “The value that Novosco brings is our unique understanding of application delivery. The days of private companies having to worry about such things are hopefully coming to an end.”

The Malton is a Victorian hotel known for its distinctive architecture and much-loved Irish landmark. It is set in six acres of landscaped gardens, with fountains and pathways, conveniently situated to Killarney town.
