What do we want? Better training! More say!

Nearly two-thirds of IT workers want better workplace training. A survey of staff at some of the best-known technology names shows that 62% felt they did not get sufficient skills training.

In addition, only 15% were satisfied with their employer’s training.

Firms polled included Accenture, Apple, Ericsson, HP, Fujitsu Services, IBM, Logica, Phoenix, and Unisys.

The survey was made by Unite, the union which claims to represent 1.5 million workers in Ireland and the UK.

It showed that over 90% of respondents felt forced ranking had a negative effect on team working.

Unite’s national officer, Peter Skyte, commented: “In such a fast moving sector, the fact that almost two thirds of people felt they did not receive the necessary training to keep up their skills is deeply worrying. Workers will lose out unless they can compete in a global IT market. Employers must do more to keep their employees skills up to date.”

“In addition, we were surprised at the extent of pre-determined performance distribution,” said Skyte.

“While people were fairly satisfied with the approach of their line manager, our survey suggests that many employees are dissatisfied with how performance is managed and assessed by employers.

Among other findings

• 21% said performance appraisals were not regular
• 28% said assessment was not by prior agreement
• 22% cannot appeal against assessment
• 21% had no right of appeal against pay awards
• 94% consider force ranking to be unfair

The survey canvassed nearly 400 employees.
