Equalskills.com is a new initiative, funded by the Government’s Information Society Fund through the Department of the Taoiseach, that plans to address the uneven uptake of information technology in Ireland by delivering a free multimedia computer training to the public.

Implemented by European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and introduced initially as a pilot scheme in the Shannon and South-West Regions, in co-operation with Shannon Development and the South-West Regional Authority, the 12-month project aims to provide every Irish person with the chance to have an informal and uncomplicated introduction to computers.

In its recent report, How the General Public is Adapting to the Information Society in Ireland, the Information Society Commission noted significant unevenness in the uptake of information technology. The report highlighted differences between sexes, age groups, different socio-economic backgrounds, regions, employment status, occupation, job status, educational achievement and income level.

It is estimated that by June of next year, around 100,000 latecomers to technology, resident in the Shannon and South-West Regions, will take up the opportunity to learn basic computer skills free of charge.
