A survey recently published by Citrix Systems has revealed that 78% of Irish workers are now working outside the office each week. The study found that 38% of respondents find that they are ‘much more productive’ and 60% are ‘just as productive’ working remotely.

The news comes at a time of great technological advancement resulting in Irish workers becoming increasingly ‘tech savvy’. The survey revealed a new technological independence among the Irish workforce as 80% of those who use personal devices such as a laptop, smart phone or iPad take care of all their own IT needs. Irish workers also seem to be awakening to the importance of the cloud as 51% of those surveyed stated that they see the value of cloud computing.

The shift towards mobile working has been attributed to an unprecedented amount of technological devices being available to consumers. Technology is breaking working/home life boundaries as 97% of those surveyed responded that they use such devices in their daily tasks, such as personal banking and shopping as well as in their employment.

Niall Gilmore, county manger at Citrix Systems Ireland stated that mobile working was instrumental to the development of a business in this era of the cloud. Gilmore said that, “what we are seeing in Ireland is that workers are tech savvy and they’re not afraid to use this knowledge to benefit their work ‘experience’.” Gilmore also added that, “as companies look to do more with their available time and resources, the practise of allowing employees to work from various locations is becoming critical to business performance.” Commenting on the findings of the survey,

Francis O’Haire, technical director at DataSolutions argued for the importance of employees using such devices to be connected to the ‘corporate network’. O’Haire remarked that, “the latest findings demonstrate the demand for the “bring your own” concept by workers, which in turn is encouraging companies to facilitate this multi device workforce.”

O’Haire added that, “our customers are realising that they can centralise data, desktops and applications securely while also delivering this information to any device using virtualisation technology.”
