IT services group Calyx has deployed a range of e-mail and website security services for the Irish Stock Exchange, where spam has at times made up 90% of inbound mail.

Calyx recommended a solution from IronPort Systems, replacing the existing ISE security solution. IronPort Systems is an independent business unit of Cisco and a major provider of anti-spam, anti-virus and anti-spyware appliances for large and small businesses.

Calyx’s Tim Quan said experience suggested IronPort would be the best solution for the ISE’s spam problem, pointing out that IronPort C100 devices stop the spam messages at the gateway, even before they enter the network.” IronPort devices use over 100 parameters check for legitimate e-mail.

The deployment saw spam e-mail reduced dramatically within days, and users were able to review spam quarantines and release valid messages when appropriate, reducing the reliance on IT staff.

The ISE then turned to Calyx for the deployment of new web security devices to replace their existing solutions. A key requirement was reverse proxy look-ups for web traffic, together with a reputation filter on a web proxy which would be able to cache and also deal with viruses, phishing and spyware attack.

Calyx deployed the IronPort S-Series Web Security device, which combines traditional URL filtering, reputation filtering and malware filtering on a single platform to address Web related risks.

Calyx employs over 500 people at 12 offices in Ireland and the UK. The Irish Stock Exchange (ISE) has been trading since 1793.
