Iomega, universally known for its once-ubiquitous Zip drives, has introduced a series of 70Gb drives aimed at meeting the backup needs of small and medium-sized businesses. The REV 70 Gb backup drive is available as an external USB 2.0 model and as an internal ATAPI drive. Users of the earlier 35Gb models will be pleased to know that the new models offer backward read and write compatibility.
Bobby Kennedy, Iomega Ireland’s key account manager, said: “After selling more than 1.2 million REV 35 Gb disks and 225,000 drives, we are now taking our REV technology to the next level.”
He said the new drive represented a superior solution to the tape products often used in server solutions for backup and archive of critical data by small and medium businesses (SMB)s. “Compared to a DAT 72 format tape drive, we offer almost twice the native capacity (36Gb vs. 70Gb for REV), instantaneous random access to files, faster backups and restores, as well as ruggedised cartridges.” Most important, he pointed out, was that the Iomega drive costs $100 to $200 less than a typical tape backup solution.
The REV product family also includes automation solutions such as the REV Loader 280, which manages eight REV 35 Gb disks in an innovative desktop enclosure.
Iomega’s REV 70 Gb disks can store as much as 140 Gb of data with compression using standard backup software. EMC award-winning Retrospect Express software ships with all desktop drives for automatic backup and disaster recovery, while REV server solutions come with CA’s BrightStor ArcServe Backup software.
