Significant and ground breaking research in the area of life sciences and ICT was recognised at the Invention of the Year Awards, sponsored by Purdy Lucey, at UCC. The Awards celebrate innovation and commercialisation of research from gatewayUCC, the BioInnovation Centre and the Tyndall National Institute.
The award for the ICT Invention of the Year was presented to Prof Peter Kennedy of Tyndall National Institute for his patented modulator for high performance frequency synthesisers. This disruptive technology could change the way the frequency synthesisers, which provide wireless communication signals, operate in the future.
The Life Sciences Invention of the Year award went to Dr Padraig Cantillon-Murphy and David Cronin at gateway UCC for their the smart-magnet gastroenteral feeding tube placement kit.
"Working with surgeons in Cork University Hospital, and with the support of the Technology Transfer Office, we developed this novel solution which will greatly assist gastroenteral surgery, and will reduce the risk of complications for patients with feeding tubes inserted using Smart Magnet technology," explained Dr Cantillon-Murphy.
This year’s judging panel was composed of Anita Maguire VP Research & Innovation, UCC; Gearoid Mooney Enterprise Ireland, director of ICT commercialisation; John O’Sullivan, partner, ACT Venture Capital; Declan O’Mahoney, CEO Maywentee, former CEO of Firecomms; and Humphrey Moynihan, principal research scientist, Eli Lilly.
