European Commission invests €399m in postdoctoral researchers
The European Commission has launched a call for funding proposals worth €399 million for postdoctoral researchers as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme. This initiative aims to strengthen research careers and promote international cooperation by enabling postdoctoral researchers to gain valuable experience in leading scientific teams worldwide.
The programme offers two main tracks: European Postdoctoral Fellowships and Global Postdoctoral Fellowships. The first track supports researchers of any nationality who carry out projects within the European Union or associated countries, while the second track enables EU or associated-country nationals to work in a third country before returning to Europe.
The eligibility criteria stipulate a maximum of eight years of research experience after obtaining a doctorate, with exceptions for specific cases such as Global Fellowships and Euratom-related research. The programme is competitive and aims to fund around 1,600 projects, highlighting its targeted nature while at the same time demonstrating the substantial investment in talent development.
The MSCA programme is in line with the broader EU Horizon Europe strategy, which prioritises excellence, mobility and skills development in European research. By supporting postdoctoral researchers through structured mobility, career opportunities and international cooperation, the EU aims to strengthen its position as a global leader in research and innovation.
The launch of this funding call reinforces the continuity of the MSCA programme as a cornerstone of EU research policy. Researchers across Europe and beyond are encouraged to seize this opportunity to advance their careers and contribute to ground-breaking research.
The deadline for applications is 9 September 2026.
