Hibernia College teams with Plymouth University for online PhDs

Hibernia College, Ireland’s only government-accredited e-learning college, will be offering a new PhD programme in collaboration with Plymouth University from January 2014.

Making the announcement, Dr Seán Rowland, president of Hibernia College, said three full-time PhD scholarships worth €16,000 and fees annually will be made available.

Hibernia College’s PhD programme – the first of its kind n Ireland – will offer full- and part-time studies in four research areas: the impact of learning technologies on learning experiences; innovation in teaching, learning and assessment; innovation in teacher education; comparative education and internationalisation.

Students can undertake their PhD from anywhere in the world through Hibernia College’s online learning platform. Anyone undertaking the Hibernia College PhD will automatically be part of the Plymouth Institute of Education, as the awarding body, and will be Plymouth University registered students. Enrolment for the Hibernia College PhD is on a rolling basis.

Prof Linda la Velle has been announced as the director of the Hibernia Node in Plymouth University working with a team of five academics.

Prof  la Velle said: “As a UK university, we have successfully collaborated with the [Hibernia] College for some years in the running of initial teacher education courses and the natural progression from this is to work together to provide postgraduate, professional, academic learning opportunities. In the Plymouth Institute of Education, we have a rich, multifaceted research environment and pride ourselves on our flexible, adaptive approach to opportunities for research and partnership. The Plymouth-Hibernia PhD node represents the best and most exciting of these.”
