Windows Phone 7 (WP7) has a big task ahead of it. Not only has Microsoft invested heavily in it in the hopes of reviving its flagging mobile device fortunes, now Nokia’s fortunes are inextricably tied to its success too.
With good support from manufacturers such as Samsung HTC and LG, the current range of WP7 devices shows relatively little variance, but a very high standard nonetheless.
Available since late 2010, early sales have been slow and market share is low compared with Apple’s iOS and the rapidly fragmenting Android from Google. WP7 sits somewhere between the current operating systems in the space, with aspects of both Android and the ‘walled garden’ approach of iOS. That said, as a new offering in the market, it is fresh, attractive and effective, with a distinctiveness that is very compelling. However, it has not been without criticisms.
