Home and business security systems relying on a GSM signal to communicate with a control centre are being subverted by tech-savvy criminals, according to home security firm Alarm Control 24. According to figures cited by the company, Garda anti-burglary operation Fiacla has resulted in 30 arrests, has recovered a substantial number of GSM jamming devices.

These devices disrupt mobile phone signals that are used by many alarm systems to communicate with monitoring bases, blocking voice, text and data services completely.

Derek Mooney, managing director of Alarm Control 24, operates the country’s only nationwide Long Range Radio Telemetry-based monitoring service that is impervious to the techniques used by burglars. The network covers over 80% of the country using KP Electronic Radio System units, millions of which are used worldwide as n alternative to GSM- and landline-based monitoring.

Unsecured phone line systems have also been targeted with criminals cutting the phone lines to the building. “We developed our Long Range Radio Telemetry network to counter all threats as radio is the only fully secure medium for monitoring,” said Derek Mooney, managing director of Alarm Control 24.

The company also called for government to review its requirement for state agencies to have GSM-based security systems. “Legislation prescribes the use of fundamentally flawed GSM systems and must be changed to ensure that state buildings are adequately protected,” Mooney said.
