Google’s video platform Veo 3 has already been put to commercial use, with a viral ad for the Women’s NBA Finals composed entirely by generative AI.

Creator JJ Ace enlisted Gemini and ChatGPT to write the script for a commercial for financial services company Kalshi. He then had Gemini generate prompts for Veo 3. So AI prompted AI, creating a primetime spot that made quite an impression.

Veo 3 can also generate audio, including dialogue, background noise and sound effects, fully synchronized with the footage. AI video generation tools such as Sora and Pika can also create amazingly realistic video clips, and with enough effort, you can string them together into a short film. What they cannot do, however, is generate audio at the same time. So Google’s Veo 3, however, can do so, which makes it a gamechanger.

In terms of visual quality, it is about on par with previous Veo 3 demos. The visuals look realistic, but each scene is short because continuity is still difficult to achieve.

The results impressive but human creatives shouildn’t be too worried just yet. Even in staged demos, the transitions falter: in one example a SWAT performing a raid shoting at nothing and sudden changes of camera angle destroyed the illusion of a coherent narrative.

PJ Ace brought the WNBA project to fruition in two days and generated 300 to 400 versions. The enthusiasm about Veo 3 is tempered by the fact that it also eliminates jobs. Ace estimates a cost reduction of about 95% compared with traditional advertising.

Veo 3 falls under the Google AI Ultra plan, which is offered in 73 countries. Users can try the platform for free for a month.
