Title: Microsoft confirms rumoured iPod rival

Google’s crown shows no sign of slipping, as the company retained its position as the world’s most popular search engine in June.

According to the latest research from Nielsen//NetRatings, around 2.67 billion searches were carried out in June using Google, giving it 49.4% of all web searches carried out in the month. The figure represents year-on-year growth of 31%.

Yahoo came second but still has some way to go with 1.24 billion searches, or 23 per cent of the total. Yahoo’s year-on-year growth is similar to Google’s at 29%.

Third and fourth places were held by MSN and AOL with 10.3% and 6.9% respectively. Both companies notched up around three per cent year-on-year growth.

Ask.com and My Way experienced year-on-year growth of 66% and 51% respectively, but each accounted for only two per cent of searches.

Netscape, Dogpile, iWon and EarthLink all experienced negative annual growth, clocking up around 0.5% of all searches in June.
