Google releases AI Mode in US
Google is introducing a new feature called AI Mode for its search platform, which allows users to get comprehensive answers to their searches on a single page. The feature – available to Google One AI subscribers in the US – adds a special tab at the top of the Google search page. When users click on this tab, they will be taken to a new page where their search is handled with a wider and more diverse range of AI-generated results.
Although Google already offers AI overviews that summarise some searches directly at the top of the page, AI Mode goes a step further by generating a full page of results based on an improved version of the Gemini 2.0 model. This model uses advanced reasoning techniques and multimodality, and includes text, audio and visuals. For example, a search for information on sleep trackers can produce a table comparing different options.
A specific timeline for a wider international rollout has not yet been announced. This launch coincides with Google’s integration of AI into its core products as Google strives to maintain its primary revenue source: Google Search.
Despite the rise of ChatGPT and other AI chatbots seen as potential threats to Google’s dominance, data so far indicate minimal impact on their market share for Google Search. AI Mode offers a glimpse into the future of Google Search and may transform the way users interact with information. It enables complex searches that may have previously required multiple queries to explore new concepts or compare options, and receives comprehensive, AI-assisted answers.
In addition, AI Mode bridges the gap between traditional Google search and the Gemini chatbot, which is currently accessible through a separate website or app. It aims to provide direct answers to searches whenever possible, while clearly displaying links to source information. It also uses shopping data for millions of products. Like Gemini, AI Mode allows users to ask follow-up questions and supports multimodality, accepting input from text, voice or images.
Google emphasises that AI Mode will be activated only when the system has high confidence in the results. In cases of uncertainty, the search engine will display a list of regular search results. Some features, such as comparison tables, will be introduced gradually over time.
