Need for speed: Sandberg’s USB 3.0 booster increases data transfer speeds
No motorhead seriously believes a yellow stripe daubed on a car’s side will make it go faster, but they do know about conversion kits that may achieve the same goal. We’ve been test-driving something along those lines for a computer: a kit that puts more speed into data transfers.
The Sandberg USB 3.0 Boost PCI-E card gives you two USB ports capable of handling the new, and much faster, USB 3.0 standard. And the difference really is astonishing, with data transfer times up to ten times faster than with USB 2. Use it to copy data to and from external USB hard drives or memory sticks.
The first step is to open your PC and slide the Sandberg adaptor card into a spare PCI Express slot, securing the flange to the computer’s back-plate and replacing the machine’s cover. Then just install the software from the supplied CD-ROM, and away you go – only ten times faster than before, or up to 5 Gbit/sec.
If you don’t yet have any thumb-drives or other external devices that use the new high-speed standard, you can still use the Sandberg USB 3.0 ports for devices using the earlier USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 standards. However, like the go-faster stripe beloved by rally drivers, it ain’t gonna make any difference in transfer speeds to and from the older hardware.
As with all Sandberg’s products, the booster card carries a five-year guaranty and comes with a multi-language user guide. Recommended retail price is €39.99.
