Futures Institute on Data and Digital Transformation officially opened at Maynooth University
Minister of State for Public Procurement, Digitalisation and eGovernment Emer Higgins was on hand for the official launch of the Futures Institute on Data and Digital Transformation at Maynooth University.
The Futures Institute will play a key role in shaping the future of research and development in data and digital transformation in Ireland and internationally. Its impact will span sectors such as health, mobility, infrastructure, education and IT, manufacturing and tourism.
Driven by the two leading research institutes at Maynooth University, the Hamilton Institute and the Innovation Value Institute (IVI), the initiative combines the interdisciplinary expertise of leading researchers across data science, artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
Built on an open innovation and collaborative model, researchers will partner with external business and public sector organisations, nationally and internationally, to focus on emerging technologies and AI, while also providing leadership in how best to incorporate digital technologies into the future.
Launching the initiative, Minister of State Emer Higgins said: “I welcome the opportunity to launch the Futures Institute on Data and Digital Transformation at Maynooth University. This is an initiative that looks ambitiously to new opportunities that will transform and shape a digital future that works for all.
“The Futures Institute will facilitate a powerful ecosystem for innovation and research underpinned by the rapid advancements of artificial intelligencethat we are witnessing globally. The collaborative model adopted at Maynooth University will facilitate research at scale, also integrating important advances for citizen protection, such as data and AI governance, as well as digital service innovation, emerging computing technologies, data science, machine learning, and applied artificial intelligence.”
The new Institute was launched as part of a three-day Digital Summit, hosted at Maynooth University. The event ‘What’s Possible by 2030 – Accelerating Change through the Responsible and Fair Use of Data, Digital and AI’ also heard contributions from experts across industry, public sector and academia.
The Futures Institute is a key ambition of Maynooth University’s Strategic Plan 2023-2028, which aims to drive progress in priority areas of research; expand capacity significantly to support research excellence, while also building on existing structures and established institutes and centres.
Prof for Digital Service Innovation at Maynooth University and the Director of the Innovation Value Institute Markus Helfert said: “The launch of the Futures Institute marks a significant step forward in how we approach digital transformation through research, innovation and collaboration. With this Institute, we are creating a collaborative space where interdisciplinary expertise meets real-world challenges, ensuring that the digital future is both innovative and inclusive. As we face unprecedented technological change, Ireland has an opportunity to lead in shaping digital transformation that is responsible, ethical and sustainable. The Futures Institute will be a key driver in this effort, engaging with partners across sectors and borders to generate impact that benefits society and the economy alike.”
