A new report by Forfas has recommended increasing the legal framework that protects intellectual property. The report, called ‘Legislating for Competitive Advantage in e-Business and Information & Communications Technology’, recommended the establishment of specialist e-Courts to rule on ICT and e-business law.

Although Ireland gained an advantage with the early  enactment of the Electronic Commerce Act 2000 and the Copyright and Related Acts 2000, other countries have now caught up, the report says.

It also recommended updating patent, copyright and intellectual property law to protect intellectual property rights, and said that the stamp duty for the transfer of such property should be reviewed. The theft of confidential information could become an offence, if the report’s recommendations are implemented.

The growing concern with cybercrime was also evident in the report, which recommended that greater protection should be available for Irish consumers and businesses who use electronic transactions and the Internet to do business.

Customer survey software

A new software package helps businesses find out what their customers really think about them. Quask software allows users to design and produce online surveys in-house, with less time and cost than other methods.

Customer satisfaction surveys, employee evaluations, candidate assessments, order forms, training and polls are just some of the uses for the software. Quask’s server collects the data, and it is kept confidential. If security is a concern, online transactions are protected by 128-bit SSL encryption.

The program also integrates with applications such as Goldmine and ACT!
