Games review website IGN has issued a report stating that Facebook games CityVille and FarmVille make more than multi-release console franchises like Madden 11 and Halo: Reach.
The data comes from a combination of a 2010 NPD report that claims 10% of Facebook gamers pay real money and a microtransaction company’s estimate that the average player spending real money spends $55.
With that figure, IGN turned to the monthly active user count Facebook keeps on Apps and calculated what the top games made – then charted it alongside 2010’s best-selling console games.
While the results may prove hard to prove definitively (especially as trade in second-hand games and rentals are not included in the data), it is worth noting the continued appeal of games not aimed at the gamer market.
