Social networking site Facebook has celebrated its fifth birthday.
Founded by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (pictured) in 2004 as a way of keeping track of his college friends, the website now boasts a user base of 220 million unique users, almost double that of nearest rival MySpace.
The average Facebook user has 120 ‘friends’, and the site’s 15 million users spend a combined three billion minutes a day updating their status, according to the company.
Facebook has also grown internationally, and more than 70% of users based outside the US. “The vast majority are not just college students in the US talking about things in their bedrooms,” said Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, at the event.
“We are showing how we are a serious and insightful community.” Last year Facebook annouced it had selected Dublin to be the location of its European headquarters, creating up to 70 jobs.
